The DOT Certified SAP is a national certification program for substance abuse professionals. The CSAP certification is granted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA). 

The CSAP credential is a nationally recognized credential that provides an objective measure of an individual’s knowledge, skills, and competencies in the field of substance abuse prevention and treatment. DOT Qualified SAP counselor has to complete at least one year of supervised experience. He or she must also complete at least two hours of continuing education every two years. The CSAP credential is conferred for a single three-year term and can be renewed for an additional three years. Recertification requires renewal of the continuing education requirement as well as a second 3-hour written examination which includes questions about new topics in substance abuse prevention and treatment.
